Viet Nam, China negotiate cooperation in less sensitive marine areas

VNA MONDAY, MAY 21, 2018 - The 11th round of negotiations of the working group on partnership in less sensitive sea-related fields between Viet Nam and China took place in Hanoi from May 14 to 18.

In a straightforward and friendly manner, the two sides reviewed and expressed their delight at cooperation outcomes since the 10th round last year.

Their review covered a number of projects on studying and comparing Holocene sediments of the Red River Delta and the Yangtze River Delta; exchanging information about and studying the management of the sea and island environment in the Gulf of Tonkin; and releasing fry and protecting aquatic resources in the Gulf of Tonkin.

They agreed to continue the implementation of these projects and compared notes on new projects proposed by the Chinese side.

They discussed joint work in marine search and rescue activities and the agreement on the establishment of a hotline for off-shore fishing emergencies.

The sides stressed that they would continue realizing common perceptions reached between leaders of the two countries and the Viet Nam – China agreement on basic principles guiding the settlement of sea-related issues.

They said cooperation needs to be made on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit and in a practical and effective manner in line with each side’s resources, thereby helping to promote the Viet Nam-China comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

The two sides agreed to organize the working group’s 12th round of talks in Beijing in late 2018.
